Located on a plateau at an elevation of almost 3,500 feet, Cashiers is a picturesque town at the southern end of Jackson County with a rich sense of community and expansive wilderness to discover. The nearby town of Highlands boasts a slightly higher elevation of 4,118 feet and is surrounded by the Nantahala National Forest.

Because it is in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, home sites around Cashiers and Highlands have stunning views of mountain ridges, old-growth trees and the diverse flora and fauna that Western North Carolina is so well known for.

The Cashiers/Highlands Plateau is home to numerous waterfalls, serene lakes and stone outcroppings that are a nature lover’s dream. Outdoor activities include legendary trout fishing, hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, horseback riding, hunting, camping, golfing, boating and kayaking. Miles of rivers and trails offer unending opportunities to challenge both novices and skilled enthusiasts.

The topography, geography and micro climate of the area create a temperate forest atmosphere that supports a vibrant habitat for wildlife. The mountain ranges are some of the oldest in the world and the forests are home to 250 endemic plants that can’t be found anywhere else. There are four distinct seasons on the Plateau, but without the drastic temperature swings of other major cities in the Southeast.

The temperature in the mountains is often 15° cooler than in other parts of the Southeast, which explains why people from Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, the Carolinas and other nearby states have long taken refuge in Cashiers and Highlands to enjoy summer retreats and second homes that allow for year-round outdoor living. This area is known for its slow-down-and-unwind attitude that offers a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of city life — yet with close proximity to plentiful shopping and acclaimed dining options.

Cashiers and Highlands have a wide variety of boutique stores, craft shops, breweries, restaurants, and spas for both humans and dogs. The local Chamber of Commerce calendar is packed with community events like Groovin’ on the Green, Highlands Food and Wine Fest, Leaf Festival, Heritage Apple Day, Arts & Crafts Shows, and Ice Skating.

With award-winning elementary and high schools as well as Southwestern Community College and Western Carolina University nearby, Cashiers and Highlands have a lot to offer families. This unique and lively area feels like it was pulled from the pages of a story book.
